Have you ever frozen up in a job interview when asked if you have any questions? If you have, don’t worry you are not alone. Being on the other side as a job interviewer, we have seen many experienced and highly qualified candidates respond with a surprising “no” or nervous head shake. When this happens, the job interviewer(s) usually think, “Why wouldn’t you want to have a chance to interview us?” Not asking questions can lead to a negative impression and show’s your lack of interest and enthusiasm to know more about the position or the company. Some of the best and most memorable conversations arise from these questions. Most interviewers like being asked questions and reversing roles since it does become boring being the only one asking all the questions.
So unless you have no interest in the job, you should always come to a job interview well prepared with at least 3-5 questions to ask the job interviewer(s).
When asking questions, ask questions where the answer is not readily available on the web site or the topic has already been covered in the interview. Asking a question that has been covered in the job interview will not reflect well on you and this will show the employer that you were not paying attention and only wasting valuable time. Also, avoid asking about salary and benefits until those subjects are raised by the employer.
Here are a few sample questions to consider:
• What are the day-to-day expectations and responsibilities of this job?
• Can you describe the company’s management style?
• Describe the company’s corporate culture?
• Does the organization support ongoing training and education for employees to stay current in their fields?
• What sets this company apart from competitors? How do you retain good employees?
• Can you describe an ideal individual for this position?
Come on give interviewers your best questions and leave an impression. Remember, even if you have one question…its better then nothing at all.
